Performing any kind of evaluation requires comparing something to a standard. A standard for assessment is hard to come by. Hitherto, evaluations of CAA systems have not been rigorous: many lack a critical judgement of the CAA systems’ effects on learning. A more rigorous review might have considered formative assessment as a standard; but using formative assessment as a standard is troublesome. For one, the definition is not widely agreed upon; for another, there are aspects of the learning process that are not considered in formative assessment.
This project seeks to define a new standard against which assessment can be evaluated; using this definition, we will evaluate the use of a CAA system at a higher education institution.
